California Road Charge Pilot Program
In 2014, the California state legislature passed legislation creating a Technical Advisory Committee to study mileage-based user fees and design a program for testing within the next two years.
The California Road Charge Pilot launched in July 2016 with more than 5,000 vehicles enrolled in the volunteer program. Volunteers will test various road charging reporting methods to compare the performance of each concept.
Results from the California Road Charge Pilot will inform the state legislature’s decision on whether and how to move forward with a full-scale, permanent road charge program
